Excel 2016 for Windows Tutorial (10 Steps)

Let's walk through the 10 steps required to make a bar graph in Excel.

  1. Enter the data into Excel by typing it in or using copy and paste.

WARNING: Be careful to make sure that your X-Axis data does not have any repeating values. If you have repeating values, you will need to create a PivotTable first. We will show you how to do this in a future tutorial.

  2. Select the data you entered by clicking on the top cell and dragging to the bottom cell.

WARNING: Be careful to only select the Y-Axis columns for the graph. In this example, we want Year on the X-Axis and iPhones Sold on the Y-Axis, so we only select the iPhones Sold column.

  3. Click the Insert menu at the top.

  4. Click the Insert Column or Bar Chart button in the Charts section.

  5. Click the Stacked Column button in the 2-D Column section.

  6. Click the Select Data button in the Data section of the Chart Tools Design menu.

  7. Click the Edit button in the Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels section on the right.

  8. Select the Year column data by clicking on the top cell and dragging to the bottom cell.

WARNING: Be careful to skip the column header. In this example, we skip the column header for Year and only select the X-axis values starting in row 2.

  9. Click OK in the Axis Labels window.

  10. Click OK in the Select Data Source window.

Finally, after following all of these steps, you will have a graph.
